If you hit the current limit, the motors will stop working, since the IC's protection circuit simply just cuts the power and re-enables it a millisecond later (and you hit the limit again, ...).
The exact current limit is somewhat different across different ICs, it's around 3.5 Amperes.
Be aware that the electronics are in a closed plastic box that can melt at high temperatures

@Tamás: may I have access to the firmware? My home is linux only but found a blog post where a certain magyar fellow uses linux and wine to transfer firmware to a gigablue chipset.
